Agricultural Compost

Yorganics’ natural, eco-friendly compost can be supplied in bulk to farmers and land managers to significantly increase crop yields. Rich in carbon, our compost supports the function of microbial populations, which are necessary to drive nutrient cycles and other essential soil processes.

  • ✓Made in Yorkshire to the British Standards Institute (BSI) PAS100 standard.
  • ✓Contains readily available potassium and slower release nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur, plus trace elements and micronutrients in smaller, useful quantities.
  • ✓Improves soil structure.
  • ✓Supports water retention and infiltration.
  • ✓Increases cation exchange in lighter soils.
  • ✓Reduces nutrient leaching.

It is fantastic stuff. We bought several bags from our local stockist, and it was so good we went back and bought more. Our neighbour has also purchased several bags as it is so good. We are extremely pleased with it and will continue to purchase more as we need it.

FAQs for farmers and contractors in agriculture

Yorganics has a wide variety of uses. We recommend you always wear gloves when handling any type of compost product.

Why should I use compost instead of fertiliser?

Yorganics agricultural compost is a natural and eco-friendly product which is ideal for use in agriculture and can be used in the same way as renewable fertiliser, such as livestock slurry and farmyard manure. Benefits include increased crop yields and a significant reduction in chemical fertiliser costs. Compost is an excellent source of crop nutrients. It contains readily available potassium (K) and slower release nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and sulphur (S). Trace elements and micro-nutrients can also be found in smaller yet useful quantities. It is an ideal soil conditioner, comprising a significant proportion of stabilised organic matter.

What are the benefits of Yorganics compost in agricultural use?

As well as providing crop nutrients, Yorganics’ soil conditioning properties improve soil structure, giving greater water holding capacity and infiltration, plus increased cation exchange in lighter soils. It also reduces nutrient leaching. Introducing Yorganics compost into agricultural soils can significantly increase crop yields. A trial by DC-Agri* showed higher yields were attributed to compost use. The trial also highlighted that where green waste compost was used in conjunction with purchased fertiliser, as part of an integrated nutrient management plan, crop yields increased by 10% in comparison to a crop fertilised only with purchased mineral fertiliser. * https://wrap.org.uk/resources/report/digestate-and-compost-agriculture-dc-agri-project-reports

How is Yorganics made?

Yorganics is a 100% recycled Peat Free compost, produced in North Yorkshire using the open windrow method. Biodegradable garden waste, such as lawn and shrub clippings from households, are recycled into a high-quality compost that meets the British Standards Institution (BSI) PAS100 standard. All composting processes follow similar stages, with temperatures rapidly rising through the mesophilic to the thermophilic range as microbial activity increases. This self-heating sanitises the material, after which, activity and temperatures decrease during stabilisation and maturation. Composting is an established natural method for stabilising organic matter before its addition to soil. It is also key to boosting the circular economy in the UK, and plays a role in combating the impacts of climate change.

Is Yorganics Compost any good?

Yorganics has been PAS100 certified by The British Standards Institution, which is a widely recognised standard within the organics recycling sector.

Yorganics compost is made from council garden waste, so why isn’t it free?

Yorganics is made from the green waste collected from households across York and North Yorkshire by the local council, however, transport and production means it isn’t free of cost to produce.

Where can I find further information on using compost in an agricultural and farming setting?

There are useful guides on how composts like Yorganics should be integrated into farm nutrient planning on the WRAP website at https://wrap.org.uk/resources/guide/compost-and-digestate-agriculture-good-practice-guide
